English CPD for Teaching Assistants and Support Staff

THIS SESSION IS A REPEAT OF THE ONE HELD IN FEBRUARY 2021
This Professional Development course is intended for Teaching Assistants and Support Staff
The day is split over two sessions, 9.30 – 11.30 am and 1.00 – 3.00 pm. Delegates will need to attend both sessions
This training day will cover the following:
- An overview of KS1 and KS2 reading: planning purposeful sessions; writing questions and modelling precise answers
- Exploring high-quality texts to support teaching comprehension and reading for pleasure
- An overview of the GPS curriculum: how to teach the trickiest aspects of GPS in an engaging way
- Exploring what makes a purposeful writing task- with an emphasis on purpose and audience
- How to plan an effective shared/guided write – the balance between scaffold and challenge
Links will be made to the EEF Improving Literacy Guidance for KS1 and KS2:
- Improving Literacy in KS1: 2) Use a balanced and engaging approach to develop reading which integrates both decoding and comprehension skills (extensive) and 4) Teach students to use strategies for developing and monitoring their reading comprehension (extensive). 8) Use high-quality structured interventions to help pupils who are struggling with their literacy (extensive)
- Improving Literacy in KS2: 3) Teach reading comprehension strategies through modelling and supported practice (very extensive). 4) Teach writing composition strategies through modelling and supported practice (extensive)
The sessions may be accessed by a number of colleagues at once.
